Description of project

This consultancy, funded by the World Bank (IDA) under the PACEJ initiative, consists of a comprehensive feasibility study to establish the Higher Institute of Mines and Transports (ISMT) at the University of Burundi. The project addresses Burundi's critical shortage of qualified professionals in the mining sector (exploration, processing, and valuation) and transport infrastructure (logistics and maintenance for road, maritime, and upcoming rail networks). The future institute aims to align academic training with international standards to boost sustainable socio-economic growth and youth employability.

Services provided
  • Designed the technical approach and work plan to guide the overall execution and strategic methodology of the institutional feasibility study.
  • Conducted a deep-dive sector diagnostic to pinpoint technical training gaps, skills shortages, and labor market demands within Burundi's mining and transport industries.
  • Structured the academic and institutional framework, defining specialized curricula, international standards, legal governance models, and architectural/infrastructure needs for laboratories.
  • Formulated a sustainable financial model and operational budget, consolidating all findings into a final framework validated during a national stakeholder workshop.
